CAGAYAN DE ORO  CITY – The League of Municipal Agricultural Officers, Municipal/City Agriculturists of the Philippines, Inc. (LeMMCAP) through their annual gathering: National Convention Cum Seminar-Workshop for Agricultural Extension Manager and now on its 15th assembly, tackled on relevant issues pertaining to Agriculture, especially the effects of climate change with the theme: Permaculture System: A farming tool and strategy to combat and mitigate the aftermath of climate change for sustainable agriculture landscape.

Attended by over 700 M/CAOs of the 16 regions in the country, as frontliners in putting forward relevant information to the farmers, the said convention aimed at strengthening and providing knew knowledge among Municipal/City Agriculturists (M/CAOs) in the face of climate change and global competitiveness.

Permaculture, as discussed by Dr. Arturo T. Juanico, Ph.D, is a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, environmental design, construction and integrated water resource management that develops sustainable agriculture regenerative and self maintained habitat and agricultural systems modelled from natural system.

“It is a philosophy of working with rather than against climate change, and serves as an alternative in the altered cycle of planting and harvest which greatly affects the farmers thus also affecting the supply of food for the people,” he further said.

Meanwhile, Honorable Secretary Proceso J. Alcala of the Department of Agriculture inducted into office the new set of LeMMCAP officers for 2016-2018. “Sumasaludo ako sa pagsisikap ng LeMMCAP na tumulong sa paghahanap at pagpapatupad ng mga inobasyon sa agrikultura at pangisdaan, tulad ng matagumpay at mabunga nating balikatan sa pagtataguyod ng participatory approach sa extension work,” commended Secretary Alcala.

“Ngayon, itong panukala ninyong permaculture system ay nakikitaan ko ng maraming pangako bilang pinaka-natural, pinaka-menos-trabaho at menos-gastos, pinaka-sustainable at pinaka-angkop na paraan ng pagsusulong ng agrikultura at pangisdaan,” he further said.

Also discussed during the seminar-workshop are: the roles of LGUs in crafting plans for the identification of relevant programs and projects of DA, updates on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification standard and its role in ASEAN Integration, as well as the best practices on Agriculture from high-performing municipalities of Lala and Kauswagan in Region 10 which both received commendable national recognitions during the Rice Achievers Awarding and Organic Achievers Awarding, respectively.

Jesusa V. Noveda, LeMMCAP National President emphasized that “Changes are inevitable. Every now and then, we are perplexed with new things which challenge our capability that we in the organization are tasked to undergo a variation of technology and be adaptive to the needs of time.
