COTABATO City — To many people, the mere mention of the word “Mamasapano” still brings up images of armed conflict. But a group of cyclists from Mindanao set out to prove that the area is no longer the war-torn town.

Last Sunday, 260 men and women mounted their bicycles in the town of Mamasapano in Maguin-danao province and rode all the way to the Office of the Regional Governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in this city, roughly 62 kilometers away.

“We have proved by cycling from Mamasapano to Cotabato City our area is now peaceful,” said Engr. Suharto Pendadilay, vice chancellor from the Mindanao State University Maguindanao and one of the participants of the “Kariling sa Kalinaw.”

The activity was spearheaded by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process with the participation of various groups, including the local government units of Maguindanao and Cotabato City. The event is part of the celebration of National Peace Consciousness Month. (with reports from bangsamoropeace)
