SOME 270 families fled their homes in a hinterland barangay of Iligan City after government forces figured in a series of clashes against the New People’s Army guerrillas on Tuesday.

Jose Pantoja, Iligan City information officer, said the skirmish started at around 6 am, then at 9 am, and then at 11 am in Sitio Bucana, Barangay Mainit in Iligan City.

Pantoja said 270 families from Sitios Bucana are now evacuated safely to Sitio Ampucaw.

The three encounters were between the joint Task force composed of the elements of 51st Philippine Army Batallion and Philipine National Police Iligan city against about 500 NPA guerrillas.

According to the Army, the soldiers were conducting a combat operation patrol in the area when they encountered the guerrillas. No casualties from both sides were reported.

In another development, three guerrillas surrendered to the Army after the encounters.

However, the identities of the surenderers, who also brought their high-powered firearms, are not yet available as of presstime.
