YESTERDAY,, July 1, 2015, the 26th anniversary of this paper, we took cognizance of some lessons learned especially from the “legend” himself in this business, Ernesto “Toto” Chu, the genius behind all these. There are several lessons that he had imparted to everybody involved in the industry like “The proper solution to a problem will lead to success,” and as much as possible, “Somebody has to man the trading center.”

I will deal mostly on the latter––that is, “manning the trading center.” In our case in this city of Iligan, it is “‘womaning’ the trade center.” I’m, of course, saying it in jest, and I think you know what I mean. Simply put, it means that there should always be somebody, some person to attend to the client whenever he comes to the office, the “trading center.” Because if nobody is around when the client comes, you see “patay kang bata ka.” No business.

Thanks again for the genius behind all these, Toto Chu, who has made it daily from the start. Daily as in “daily,” really. Not a “daily” that is really “dili daily.” For this business is a felt need of the people. And because of its being daily, clients are not hard to come by.

They might not be “earth-shaking” clients but they really need the services of a paper like GSD. Pronto. As in, as they say it in youthspeak. Like the extrajudicials, of which there are plenty, because Mindanao has so much property to settle to those who are entitled. Or the teachers’ advertorials. Or the Orders from the RTC… we could go on and on.

GSD also has a good set of editors, led by our––I’ll just say “meticulous” (as the better word for the moment escapes me), editor-in-chief Herbie Gomez. Herbie would ask, “Did you really hear the judge saying this?” Or a memo would come by stating, “This incident happened several days ago. Why did you send the story only now?” For this, we would come up with some lame excuses (ha, ha) which Herbie either accepts or…

We have a good administration which, really, a successful business must have. Otherwise… Allow me to thank, too, the persons who “woman” the Iligan office and/or make the necessary efforts to make the news still “hot” to be worthy of reporting: Tomasita “Sita” Asequia, Bonita “Bonitz” Ermac, Adelfa “Nene” Lachica, Irma Boza, Frank Dosdos Jr., Erlinda Genovia, and all the other media personalities who I can’t name now.

And yes, the clients, who have kept the faith all these years inspite of some lapses, sometimes on our part. By the way, here’s a parting shot on “manning the trade center.” These days, we’re really glad to have these modern tech like the cellphone or the Internet. For, if circumstances make us leave the “trading center” for a while, a sign on the office will do. For the moment, a sign that says, “Just around, text call mobile phone no…” And sometimes they call at ten or eleven in the evening, and well, in that case, “manning the trading center” is taken to another level.
Now, I rest my case. Happy anniversary, Gold Star Daily!
