BUTUAN City––New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Monday ambushed a soldiers and police officers on a convoy in Barangay Judgan, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte.

Capt. Roberto Floredo, Civil Military Operations (CMO) officer and spokesperson of the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion, said the soldiers under Lt. Junel Castillo and officers from the Surigao del Norte Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) headed by Insp. Mark Neil Mautin were heading towards Surigao City when fully armed rebels with AK-47s staged the attack.

He said the government troops fought back for 10 minutes, and then the rebels withdrew. Floredo claimed there was no casualty on the side of the government troops––only bruised soldiers and policemen––but their vehicles were riddled with bullets. He could not say how this was possible.

Floredo said the soldiers and policemen just finished their combat patrol operations in Malimono and San Francisco towns because of sightings of NPA rebels.

The military launched pursuit operations as a response to the ambush. (ben serrano)
