MANILA — Incumbent 10th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Eduar-do Año was appointed as Philippine Army (PA) chief Wednesday.

This was confirmed by PA spokesperson Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato in an interview with the PNA.

Año replaced Lt. Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri who has been appointed as the Armed Forces of the Philippines chief-of-staff last July 10.

He is now the 57th PA commanding general to about 80,000 soldiers.

Año is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1983. As cum laude of his batch, Año’s “mistahs” include Iriberri, Maj. Gen. GloriosoMiran-da, and Lt. Gen. Ricardo Visaya.

He took over the helm of the 10th Infantry Division last July, based in Davao.

His unit led the operations that killed New People’s Army Commander LeoncioPitao, also known as KumanderParago.

Prior to that, Año was the head of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP). As chief of ISAFP, he was instrumental in the arrests of highanking Communist Party of the Philippines’ power couple, Benito and Wilma Tiamzon and retired Army General JovitoPalparan.

Año has also been implicated in the abduction of missing activist Jonas Burgos. (PNA with reports from Bulatlat.com)
