THE events that have unfolded these past few days have affected the lives of many.  My househelp who is not even a voter in Cagayan de Oro shed tears watching the news about the Ombudsman decision against Mayor Moreno.

Arlene and her husband Roel have stayed with us for more than 10 years now and we have treated them like family.  Roel is a construction hand and during his lull days, he stays with us and helps around.  He tends to the two black dogs we have and does errands.  Arlene on the other hand makes our mornings easier.

Arlene shed tears upon hearing that Mayor Moreno is facing what could probably be the biggest challenge in his political life.  In their own words, Arlene uttered, “Nakahilak kos balita nga ipapahawa si Moreno ug dili na pwede ipadagan. Siya pa hinoon ang daghan ug kaayuhan nahimo sa Cagayan siya pa ang gidaut.”

Then Roel added, “Si (name of politician) gyud tingale ang nagpaluyo aning tanan.” We told them we don’t have proof so we cannot conclude about who could have done it.

What Arlene and Roel felt could be the sentiment of many.  From an objective point of view, Mayor Moreno has done so much for Cagayan de Oro that his accomplishments have not passed unnoticed even by those who are indifferent who the sitting mayor would be.

I have not discussed politics at home, much less with Arlene and Roel.  We discuss events as they unfold before everybody else in the city.  But this has not prevented them from forming their own opinion on current events.

Their reaction to what is happening to Mayor Moreno could be reflective of the sentiment of the common tao who does not loiter on Facebook or in gossip groups in the neighborhood.  Their sentiments could be how Mayor Moreno has been seen by those in the margins of the city, those who are in the “supporting roles” of the community.

Arlene’s tears could just be a symbol of how a good number of people in Cagayan de Oro have felt about the perceived injustice now being faced by Mayor Moreno.

“Kung kinsa pa ang daghan nahimo nga kaayuhan sa syudad, siya pa karon ang gidaug-daug” could be what the hearts of those who have seen the delivery of sincere and real services may be shouting.

Maybe. In the end, justice will prevail.
