Iligan City — The Philippine Army stationed here has requested the city government to open the gates of the National Steel Corporation even during rush hours only to ease the worsening traffic situation in the city brought about by the Marawi seige which had people and vehicles from Marawi city descending on Iligan since May 23.

Councilor Sorilie Bacsarpa, overall chair of the Iligan City Fiesta Management Board on Wednesday said that Col. Alex Aduca of the 4th Mechanized Batallion stationed here has requested that the opening may be done  even if during rush hours only, from 5 to 8 in the afternoon. This is to widen the area in which vehicles could pass to and from south of the city. Gates to be opened would be Gates 1 to 4.

Bacsarpa said the city has hold in abeyance its reply since the NSC has “legal” concerns.

To note, the area is being claimed by the city after the defunct steel plant failed to settle its real property tax obligations in the amount of over P4 billion. The Board of Liquidators though which is chaired by Atty. Danilo Concepcion is protesting the city’s claims and has gone to court over it.

Bacsarpa said on Oct. 19, the city will meet with the liquidator to discuss said matter.

It was also learned that the Iligan Fiesta Park, which was formerly known as “Mugna” will be located now at the C-3 road so as to “decongest’ traffic areas.]
