SUNDAY is either binge or detox. Binge if you followed the diet for the rest of the week, detox if Sunday is the only day you can follow the diet. The choices can be extreme, from burgers and fries for binge, to apples and water for detox. Which do you prefer? Burgers and fries, of course.

Once upon a time, the senior-moment generation was young and could feast on any food they were craving for without gaining weight. Those were happy and carefree years. They didn’t worry about levels—blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar. They didn’t monitor sleeping hours. They partied the whole night and worked the morning after.

Many decades later and here they are, shocked at the realization that they’re now the old generation, that this year’s debutants were born in the year 2000, that when people say, Ten years ago, they’re referring to 2008 and not 1998. “How time flies” is an understatement.

At least one old-ish now prefers a simple life, he’d rather watch paint dry.

There’s this TV series called “The Young and the Restless.” So, for the seniors, it’s The Old and the Rested? Eight hours of sleep each night, one-hour siesta after lunch, definitely rested.

The current young generation can’t be described as restless anymore as they stare at the screens of phones, tablets, laptops, computers and TV sets. But still restless when it comes to their careers and goals in life. That’s the advantage of being young, with the whole world at their feet.

The old, on the other hand, have pain in their feet, knees and hips, a one-carat diamond falls and rolls to the deepest part of that dark and dusty space between cabinet bottom and floor, and the old decide to leave it there. They can’t kneel even on an upholstered kneeler during Mass. They have no patience to listen to a priest’s homily that keeps going and going forever and ever about the essence of confession and communion. Last February, Pope Francis said a homily should “be brief… no more than 10 minutes, please!” Long and winding homilies can make even the young and the restless sleepy.

But here’s good news that won’t make you sleepy. Cagayan de Oro Liga ng mga Barangay President Alam Lim has joined the team of Mayor Oscar Moreno a.k.a. Team Oca. Was Lim wearing a violet top at the press conference? Hmmm. Still, “If you can’t beat them, join them,” as the saying goes.

We gotta feeling Election 2019 will be interesting, with the political parties of Mayor Moreno, Congressman Klarex Uy and Vice Mayor Kikang Uy, the Emanos and the Rodriguezes as the candidates the Cagayanon will vote for. Mayor Moreno, however, is not a fan of division, he wants unity for the city’s political parties. That’s why it’s called a team.

Meanwhile, the Misamis Oriental Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) is taming down the repercussions of gossip, more particularly the allegations unleashed by a provincial board member about ghost employees. The last time I checked, Halloween is not here yet. So, why the focus on ghosts? But see how gossip could morph into a serious topic once it’s digested as the truth and nothing but? Tsk tsk.

This is a sign, though, that the province’s SP also needs spring cleaning in finding out if these ghost-employee allegations are true. Yup, spring cleaning must be the key to everything. The more you declutter, the clearer the big picture, and this can be true for the source of the gossip and the subject of the gossip.

But there are people who refuse to stay above the gossip and will instead choose to swim in it, dive into it and stay there for the rest of their pathetic life. They don’t want to know the truth since it has the possibility to prove they’ve been wrong in siding with the gossip. Let’s hope SP members will indeed find out the truth soonest so they can move forward to more important matters like, hmmm, next year’s midterm election? Because it seems like any Pinoy politician’s decision-making process is now focused on that election. Even President Rody Duterte has intensified his no-nonsense speeches and actions since that did work for him in his campaign in 2016, probably hoping it will help boost the morale of his candidates for next year.

A politician or a wannabe politician has to pick what’s best for him as he looks forward to Election 2019—binge or detox? Which may translate to complicate or simplify. Complicate the campaign to confuse the potential voter who will end up voting for that candidate, anyway, in the midst of the confusion. Or simplify the campaign to help the potential voter focus on and believe in the candidate’s plataporma. Will the Pinoy voter deserve the one he will vote for? Uh. Abangan.
