DAVAO City – Business leaders from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines will meet at the Chief Executive Officers’ Conference and Exhibit on August 19, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center to tackle issues concerning the information and communications technology industry in the economic subegion.

The gathering of CEOs is one of the highlights of the four-day Livelihood Exchange 2015 (LiveX2015) on August 18 to 21.

ICT-Davao vice president Lizabel Holganza, in Wednesday’s Club 888 Forum at the Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said they will discuss the development initiatives that have been done in the BIMP-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) while gearing up for the Asean Economic Community that will take effect in December.

“ICT is one of the sectors for cooperation and collaboration among the member countries in the ASEAN and in the BIMP-EAGA. ICT is a key enabler for socio-economic development and integration in the region and beyond,” the briefer added.

The conference will also discuss innovation and entrepreneurship, being the key components in the creation of business startups ecosystem in the region.

Holganza said Brunei will discuss what has been done to stir developments in its ICT sector while the Philippines will propose five BIMP-EAGA projects.

She only named three of the proposed projects — build a better internet infrastructure that is suitable based on the geographical location, electronic commerce (e-commerce platform), and talent development.

The ICT executive emphasized on the use of technology to earn good income without having to spend much on capital.

She admitted that the cost of internet in Mindanao is high, but added the telephone companies insisted they could not lower the price because the island only has few users.

The role of women in the ICT development will also be tackled.

“Women leaders have been championing the use of ICT to improve efficiency and service. This segment presents the milestones of women leaders while advocating and advancing ICT in their undertakings,” the briefer added.

The emergence of e-commerce will be highlighted, particularly how the micro, small and medium enterprises can take advantage of technology to get a competitive edge in the AEC.

Other events that will take place at the LIVEX 2015 will include BPO Developers Forum, Hack-a-Thon, and Technology for Education (Tech4Ed).

The BPO fiesta, an annual fellowship gathering of workers in the BPO industry in Davao Region, is expected to gather some 500 participants and 5,000 visitors. mindanews
