JULY 4 is Arbor Day in the city of Cagayan de Oro.

This after legislators headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy enacted an ordinance declaring every 4th day of July each year as Arbor Day or Tree Planting Day in the city.

Councilor Edna Dahino, proponent of the ordinance,  said the legislation is in compliance with  Republic Act No. 10176, which mandates all local government units to proclaim its own Arbor Day at an appropriate fixed day every year.

“Most importantly, this ordinance was filed for the trees’ contribution to our ecological and environmental value. Early in our elementary years, we were taught that trees give us only oxygen and food but only in recent years that we place so much value to it when we were experiencing horrible effects of climate change. We recognize the need to protect our biodiversity by planting more trees and passing this ordinance, we make a very real contribution to the environment,” Dahino added. (sp)
