THE city was placed under a state of calamity due to Monday’s floodings that were brought by a low pressure area and tail-end of a cold front.

The city council issued the declaration during an emergency meeting after midnight yesterday.

Vice Mayor Reineir Joaquin Uy said the city council met at around 1 am on the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk  Reduction Management  Council to Mayor Oscar Moreno.

Councilors who voted for the declaration were George Goking, Annie Daba, Suzette Daba, Reuben Daba, Ma. Lourdes Gaane, Jay Pascual, Teodulfo Lao Jr, Enrico Salcedo, Romeo Calizo, Ian Mark Nacaya, and Zaldy Ocon.

“Imminent na gyud kaayo panginahanglan  adto nga hitabo. Ti-aw moy entire city ang apiktado sa baha, dili na mahimo nga pabuntagan pa,” said Councilor Lao.

Councilor Goking said the city council declaration would allow Mayor Moreno to use city hall’s calamity fund to help residents badly affected by the floodings and landslides.

On Monday night, the city government ordered the forced evacuation of residents in 10 barangays, including Bulua which lies along the national highway.

The LPA and the tail-end of a cold front also caused flooding in Iligan City, Oroquieta City in Misamis Occidental, parts of Zamboanga Peninsula as well as in Cebu and other parts of the Visayas.

Some schools in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan suspended classes yesterday.

Alexandria Mordeno, a student of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology said floodwaters outside her boarding house in Tibanga reached knee-high on Monday night.

MSU-IIT declared a suspension of classes on Tuesday.

Also on Monday night, the flood in Cagayan de Oro stranded several students, faculty members and other employees of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines. (nitz arancon, and mindanews)
