IF plan goes well, a modern and state-of-the-art sports training center will rise in Barangay Lumbia soon.

City sports consultant Oscar Cinco said the proposed three-hectare Cagayan de Oro City Sports Training Center would be equipped with facilities such as rubberized track and field oval, football, softball and baseball fields, an Olympics standard-sized swimming pool, lawn tennis courts, archery range, boxing gym, athletes’ quarters (dormitory), canteen and parking spaces.

City hall’s sports focal person Stephen Dacoco said the Philippine Sports Commission has already sent technical experts to make the proposed sports training center’s perspective and 3D-format technical design as requested by Mayor Oscar Moreno who sought the help of PSC chairman Butch Ramirez.

Officials said the establishment of the training center is envisaged to bring to a higher level the performance of athletes from the city and neighboring areas in the region “who will bring pride and honor to the city and Northern Mindanao in local, national and even international sporting events.”

City hall said it plans to provide monthly stipends, food allowances, free education and dormitory accommodation to trainees-athletes so they could really focus on their training, and to ensure a fully-sustained and scientific training approach.

Moreno said the proposed construction of the sprawling training center would be a “daunting and challenging job at hand” because such a  project would require considerable funds. (cio)
