CITY hall’s environment chief over the weekend said an anti-mining raid carried out by Task Force Kinaiyahan late last week showed there was a mole in the group who has been alerting illegal miners before each operation. Edwin Dael, head of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro), said it has become clear to him that “there is a Judas” in the Task Force.

Dael said this after the group raided an illegal mining site near the boundaries of Opol town in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro on Thursday morning.

The raid in Barangay Limunda, Opol, Misamis Oriental, resulted in the seizure of over P1 million in mining equipment.

No one was arrested because the operator and his workers were all gone even before members of the Task Force came, said Dael.

“Sigi lang kay mahibaw-an ra gihapon namo kinsay naghudas sa among grupo sa Task Force,” he said. Dael said a Chinese was allegedly behind the two-year illegal mining operation in the Opol village that affected the Iponan River.

The raid resulted in the confiscation of an air compressor, water pump, electric generator, blasting caps, detonator, electrical cords, and 24 sacks of ammonium nitrate, among others.

The mining equipment were brought to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) compound in Barangay Puntod while the explosive materials were turned over to police bomb experts.

Dael said it was the biggest catch of Task Force Kinaiyahan so far since it was organized. The Task Force is chaired by known environmental activist and Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) chairman Orlando Ravanera.
