THE Cagayan de Oro Water District sought a P425-million loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines some two years ago so it could rehabilitate its network of water pipes.

This was done in order to reduce the utility’s losses due to underground leaks, said COWD chairman Eduardo Montalvan.

He said only half of the approved P425-million loan has been released by DBP, and the remainder would be made available after the COWD completes the first phase of the rehabilitation program.

Montalvan said COWD has managed to reduce the losses or “nonevenue water” resulting from the leaks by 59.9 percent.

But he said the latest information he received is that the NRW was down to 50.36 percent.

He said the COWD has continued to work on its water pipes as it aims to further reduce the NRW to 30 percent.

“Makuha lang namo ang 30 percent NRW, OK na kaayo,” Montalvan told reporters.
