VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental–The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will subject the consignees and brokers to an investigation in connection with Wednesday’s seizure of five container vans with highly taxable goods that included two Mercedes Benzes and the legendary Porsche 911 car, used clothing and meat.

BOC collector Marvin Mison said those who would be investigated include Rudolf Golez, a scion of a prominent family in the city, for the van containing two Mercedes Benz 280 SL sedans and the Porsche 911 car, all three with a total declared value of P4 million.

Mison identified the owner of the container vans full of blankets, pillow cases, curtains, bed sheets and used clothing from Korea as Gamma Gray Marketing from Manila.

For the vans containing frozen meat from France, Mison said UML Farm and Trading Corp. from Manila is being investigated.

“We will dispose the frozen meat as soon as possible because it is showing signs of spoilage already,” Mison said.

The container vans were opened by Customs officials at the Mindanao International Container Terminal in this municipality.

The renewed campaign against smuggling came after Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon threatened to shoot corrupt personnel in the BOC.

“That is the instruction of Commissioner Faeldon. We do not want it to happen first at the BOC regional office,” said Alvin Enciso, BOC chief intelligence officer.

The Bureau said it would auction off the vintage cars, and burn the meat, said Roswald Joseph Pague, BOC 10 deputy collector and spokesperson.

Pague said the vehicles were considered “abandoned.”

He said documents for the cars were incomplete.

“A balikbayan is allowed to bring vehicles to the country provided that all requirements must be completed, and registered under the name of the consignee,” Pague said.

He said the car ownership was being questioned and there was no import clearance.

Pague said the meat shipment was a violation of the Food Safety Act of 2013. All meat and processed meat products from abroad, he said, should pass through a quarantine process and pass the quality standards of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Quarantine.
