Duterte in Canoy’s home, bars politicos

PRESIDENT Duterte made a surprise visit to former mayor Reuben Canoy here on Tuesday, and condoled with him over the loss of his wife.

The former Cagayan de Oro mayor’s wife, Solona Torralba Canoy, died on Sunday at 94 years old. She is survived by her husband, Reuben and children Rhona, Chet, Marc and Don.

Security was tight that even local politicians were either barred or escorted out by the Presidential Security Group.

Duterte arrived at the Canoy family’s home in Kauswagan at around 8 pm where he stayed for nearly two hours.

“Gikan man tu siya (Duterte) sa Zamboanga to visit the soldiers there,” said Canoy’s daughter Rhona.

Ms. Canoy said Duterte came to personally convey his condolences to her father Reuben, and during his visit, the two former mayors talked about Mindanao issues. The former Cagayan de  Oro mayor is a member of Duterte’s Consultative Committee that proposed changes to the Constitution.

Ms. Canoy said Duterte was concerned about her father’s health.

She said many local politicians wanted to come but were disallowed by Duterte. Those who managed to get past the gate were asked to leave and escorted out by the PSG.

“Bisag kaila niya gipaeskortan pagawas. Gibawalan tanan. Personal visit man gyud ang iyang tuyo,” Ms. Canoy said.
