THE results of a Pulse Asia survey show Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte emerging as a likely serious contender in next year’s presidential race.

Duterte, who was previously not included in the survey questionnaires of Pulse Asia, tied with Estrada in the third place with 12 percent. The former president and now Manila mayor managed to chalk in two percent more from the November survey result of 10 percent.

Vice President Jejomar Binay still maintains his lead at 29 percent while Sen. Grace Poe dropped from 18 percent to 14 percent,

But the most dramatic performance in the survey however was that of Duterte who, from virtually nowhere, scored 12 percent, making him the biggest winner even when he ranked third and sharing the slot with Estrada.

Duterte left behind Sen. Miriam Santiago (nine percent) and Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (six percent).

The tail enders were Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, senators Francis Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Antonio Trillanes, former senator Panfilo Lacson, and former senator Richard Gordon with less than five percent each.

Details of the survey indicate that Binay drew his biggest support from Visayas and Luzon. He lost substantial followers from Mindanao which used to be his bailiwick in past surveys.

Duterte, on the other hand, grabbed the biggest chunk of his supporters from Mindanao where he scored the highest among all others. Duterte made his foray in the Visayas, advocating federalism only in the first week of March.

Also last week, Duterte had an exclusive audience with generals of the Armed Forces and the National Police. pna
