A LAWYER, a daughter of a former mayor, and an ex-barangay chairman were among the first to file their certificates of candidacy for various positions in the city yesterday.

Lawyer Evangeline Carrasco filed her certificate for the congressional race in the city’s 2nd District at 2:42 pm.

Carrasco, who is running as an independent candidate, was accompanied by members of her family and supporters.

Carrasco, known for her and her lawyer-husband Mariano’s labor and human rights advocacies, would likely face seasoned politicians like Abante Mindanao Rep. Maximo Rodriguez Jr. of the Centrist Democratic Party (CDP), Councilor Ramon Tabor of Padayon Pilipino, and ex-councilor Edgar Cabanlas of the Liberal Party, in the 2016 race for the congressional post in the 2nd District.

Carrasco was the third person to file a certificate of candidacy at the Comelec office here yesterday. The first was former Taglimao barangay chairman William Guialani who submitted his papers to the Comelec at 8:20 am.

The former barangay chairman said it would be an uphill battle for him because he is running as an independent candidate in the 1st District without a political machinery.

He said he decided to run independently from the city’s warring parties because he didn’t want to be dictated upon.

About an hour after Guialani filed his certificate, ex-mayor Reuben Canoy’s daughter Rhona submitted her papers, too, to the Comelec office here. The Comelec received her documents at 9:25 am.

Like the former Taglimao barangay chairman, Ms. Canoy is also running for councilor in the 1st District as an independent candidate.
