One can never deny that social media is essential to your business marketing mix. Having had handled different types of social media accounts in CDO and Mindanao (in different industries) for years, I have proven that the lack of proper social media marketing would result to poor brand awareness, sales and even a closure. Sorry, I don’t mean to scare you but that’s the reality. I will be blunt as possible but don’t fret here are a couple of things to consider and questions you must ask your social media person.

Have a reputation check. You will let this person handle your social media so it’s best to have a background check. If they’re legit social media people, they’ll most likely have a website or presence on major social networks. If they have a large following, don’t get too excited – following can be bought, check if they engage with their audience in a quality manner. One more thing, ask for a referral from their past employers or clients.

Ask for certifications or relevant trainings attended. Social Media is not just merely posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. It actually has science on it. Every post and words online should have a purpose. Make sure your social media person is equipped with the relevant and updated knowledge about how to manage social media for businesses. This medium is so fluid that it changes in an instant, your business should be able to adapt and embrace it smoothless.

Invite them to a “calculate social media ROI” discussion. This is quite tricky. Again, social media is not just merely posting. At the end of the day, it’s all about numbers. If they can’t explain this and just divert your attention to some theatrics – it’s time to wrap up the conversation. If they pass this, level up the conversation.

Lastly, ask them to discuss to you in layman’s term what is Analytics, UTM, Google Tag and Custom Audiences and how will your business benefit from it. For every social media person, data is important. It validates work and an adept knowledge on this will make ROI and data tracking and remarketing easy peasy. Your social data can give you insight on where your business is, where will it go and what your customers are clamouring. I remember two of my accounts expanded their business line or product using social data. It may be a little work to do in pulling data but it’s worth the opportunities that have opened.

Remember, your business is at stake. Make sure to tap the right social media person. Never be overwhelmed with the fancy presentation. Go immediately to the meat. If you have something to add or ask.
