THE European Union’s ambassador to the Philippines, Franz Jessen, visited a town in Lanao del Norte where hundreds of Maranaos displaced by the Marawi siege have sought refuge.

Jessen came over on Wednesday to see how the EU can further help in the ongoing humanitarian aid. He was with his wife Mme Qi Wang.

Jessen is the lead ambassador of EU and all donations from the Union’s member countries pass through him.

Katherine Yu, head of PDP Cares Foundation that delivered relief aid in Pantar, Lanao del Norte, on Wednesday, said Jessen expressed interest in providing “permanent help” such as rehabilitation and housing.

Yu said Jessen also expressed interest in helping children receive proper education, and this could mean building schools and more teachers who could help in psychological rehabilitation.

“They approached us because they wanted to see our efforts in helping people. They are concerned, and they wanted to see how the relief aid is reaching the victims. They have seen our group as trustworthy,” Yu said.

She said PDP Cares Foundation would meet with Jessen’s group to see how can forge a partnership for the benefit of the displaced Maranaos.

The Foundation, which helps people and groups in need, is operating under the office of Senate President Aquilino Martin Pimentel III.

The Foundation distributed food supplies and other relief goods to evacuees in Barangay Kampong, Pantar town.

The group also provided free eye consultation and distributed P20 thousand worth of reading glasses from the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists Inc. Another group that helped was Essilor Vision Foundation. (joey nacalaban)
