Contingents from the municipalities of Misamis Oriental showcased the rich culture and history of Misamis Oriental in the Kuyamis Festival Dance held at the Misamis Oriental Integrated Sports Complex.
Kuyamis Festival of Misamis Oriental, in celebration of the founding anniversary of the province, is annually celebrated in January that highlights cultural shows and competition among municipalities such as the spectacular festival dance competition depicting the history or culture of the province with emphasis on kuyamis.
Kuyamis was launched in 2013 which served as a venue in promoting various products made from Kuyamis, a variety of golden colored sweet coconuts that are smaller in size than the other coconut variety. It was believed that it is where Misamis Oriental derived its name.
In a message, Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said the province of Misamis Oriental is aiming to become the coconut capital in the country with the huge potential to become a huge source of different products made out of coconut which is abundant in the province’s two cities and 24 municipalities. Promoting the coconut industry in the province is the most viable option of the province.
Emano, in the 6th Kuyamis Festival, said the festival is getting bigger every year and the contingents for this year’s festival dance competition has become the proof for this year’s improvement. From a mere six contingents since it was launched last year to this year’s 13 participating city/municipalities—Balingoan, Talisayan, Lagonglong, Tagoloan, Initao, El Salvador City, Naawan, Manticao, Libertad, Binuangan, Sugbongcoogon, Gitagum, and Opol.
Lawyer Jeffrey Saclot, head of the provincial tourism department, said the 13 contingents were judged by these criteria—performance which includes the mastery and the storyline (50 percent), choreography which includes group dynamics, formation and synchronization (30 percent), costume includes use of props (15 percent), music and overall impact another (15 percent).
