A TWELVE-year-old Filipino from Zamboanga City stepped into the limelight when he emerged as one of the winners from a field of more than 3,000 entrants from various countries around the world in an international art contest held recently in observance of World Food Day 2016 under the theme “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.”

With his artwork entry titled “Addressing Climate Change for Food Security” and depicting “climate actions,” Angel Barachiel S. Muñoz, a Grade 7-A pupil of the Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School Tetuan, brought honor to the country when he stood out as one of the top 20 finalists and eventually won the third place in the 9-12 age category of the 2016 World Food Day Poster Contest co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Women’s Guild (UNWG) in Rome, Italy.

Angel Barachiel’s uncle and trainer Daniel D. Muñoz said the top three poster designs in all the three categories of the contest were announced on the WFD website on October 14 during the official celebration of World Food Day in Rome.

Daniel said that in Angel Barachiel’s category, entrants from Maldives and India claimed the first and second places, respectively.

The trainer said that Angel Barachiel was just one of the several young artists from the Philippines who vied for top honors in the three categories.

“Two of them also made the top 20 in the the 13-19 age group. However, Angel Barachiel became the only Filipino winner in this year’s annual WFD poster contest,” the trainer said.

As one of the top three winners, Angel Barachiel received a prize and a certificate of recognition signed by a United Nations official, he said.

According to Daniel, the organizers said that the winning posters, which were showcased in an exhibition during the WFD Week at FAO Headquarters in Rome, will also be promoted on FAO social media and by FAO offices. (Totoy Muñoz)
