THE VERY first female president of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines has passed away Thursday last week at the age of 102 years old.

Former senator Helena Z. Benitez, the first female president of the Guild, served her term at the helm of CEGP in the year 1936-1937 during the Philippine Commonwealth period. She’s a former editor of Philippine Women’s Magazine, the official student publication of Philippine Women’s University during that time.

In her message for the Guild’s 80th anniversary on 2011, Benitez described her stint as college editor as “one that inspired and spurred me to persevere and commit myself to my profession and career in education, public and civil society service and other endeavors that required sincerity and dedication.”

As a senator, she championed laws and resolutions on education, environment and youth development. Her term was cut-short when Martial Law was declared in 1972. She also held several international positions such as chairman of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and member of the board of the International Association of Universities, the first Filipina to hold both job.
