SINGAPORE –Unlike the Merscov  scare that prompted health authorities here to quash the wrong information coming from Cagayan de Oro last week, the lies and deception has started  brewing back home as election fever hit ground, up and running for  the most coveted seat in Malacanang.

‘Tis a season of flirting with the Filipino electorate as presidential hopefuls and other candidates brace the scorching summer sun, openly   campaigning in all corners of the land, bringing  hopes, promises and dreams this country has long been wanting for.

This brings us to  connect to a Spotify favorite “From A Distance” popularized by Bette Midler. The lyrics are exact reflections of our unique  peculiarities as a people during election time.

Our sincere apologies to American singer-songwriter Julie Gold who penned this  meaningful song in the ’80s for the revision.  Now listen to this:

From a distance, we can hear different voices trying to outdo each other, promising the moon and the stars, the good life of every man.

From a distance, the color of politics looks blue and green, yellow and even maroon, like  rainbow in the open, infinite sky.

From a distance, the ocean of deceit meets the stream of promises and the eagle takes the daring flight, flying through the scattered islands thirsty of lasting peace, unity and progress.

From a distance, here is the supposed harmony as it echoes through the land, and there is  a possibility  of hope, a voice of peace, and the voice of every man on the street–heard and justified through the power of the ballot come May 9 national elections.

From a distance, we will all have enough and no one is anymore in need. No more guns, no more bombs and diseases in the land, and perhaps no more hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance, we are all instruments of peace as the world looks upon us in blue and green, in white and red–all  colors of peace and development.

From a distance, dear Uncle Sam in  snow-capped mountains white garb keeps watching over us, laying songs of hope, playing songs of peace as both are the songs of every man hungry of peace in the land.

From a distance, you look like my friend even though we are at odds, in this crucial moment in the life of a nation in search for upright leaders who can deliver and make a difference.

From a distance, there is harmony as it echoes through the land.  And it’s the hope of hopes,  it’s the love of loves and it’s the heart of every man that matters.

God is watching us–from a distance.
