THE city council’s committee on trade, commerce and industry is set to call for a public hearing to look into complaints regarding the poor services of telecommunications firms in the city.

Councilor George Goking, the committee’s chairman, said the public hearing has been set on the last week of this month. The announcement comes on the heels of a deluge of complaints about the telecommunication signals in many of the city’s barangays, especially in the hinterlands.

“We need to get more complaints from other sectors to end the duopoly. Existing nga mga telecommunication provider maayo lang mukubra sa bayad, dili sa ilang serbisyo,” Goking said.

Goking said after the public hearing, the committee would endorse a resolution asking commitment to Mislatel Consortium to the city council for approval. Mislatel Consortium recently won the bidding to become the country’s third major telecommunications industry player.

The newly formed consortium is composed of Davao tycoon Dennis Uy’s Udenna Corp., its logistics arm Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp., Chinese stateun China Telecom Corp. Limited, and the Mindanao Islamic Telephone Corp. Inc.

“We will take this as a new challenge for the incoming telecommunications company kay dugay naman kayo ning existing problem then wala man gihapo’y nahimo. Nagkinahanglan na kita og bag-ong key player in telecommunications,” he said.
