THE Mindanao Gold Star Daily, the longest running daily newspaper in this part of the country, turned 29 yesterday.

A year shy of three decades is no small accomplishment for a newspaper that started when typewriters were still being used in many newsrooms. It is the only daily in the city that has covered the administrations of five presidents, excluding President Duterte who is still on the second year of his six-year office term.

The paper, which was founded in 1989 by businessman Ernesto G. Chu, started as a mere six-page daily in Cagayan de Oro. A few years later, it metamorphosed into a regional newspaper, expanding to other areas in Mindanao. The Rotary Club of Manila recognized it and gave it the coveted Regional Newspaper Award for the year 2008-2009.

It was Chu who pioneered the concept of regional newspapering in Mindanao as it is now known. Now the president emeritus of Mindanao Gold Star Daily Corp., Chu’s wife Guadalupe has long succeeded him as president of the firm.

Throughout the years, the paper has received numerous accolades for its journalism and service in Mindanao, including its environmental journalism, and business and economic reporting; the paper is a hall of famer in the Philippine Press Institute-Konrad Adenauer Foundation awards for economic and business reporting (1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002).

Chu said the paper will continue its focus and interest in providing accurate information so people would have informed decisions, and in giving a voice to communities through countryside journalism.

The paper’s service and success, he said, would not be possible without the advertisers and readers who  have been patronizing the paper for nearly 30 years. (ben balce)
