THE Mindanao Gold Star Daily marks its 27th year today with a tribute to its founder and president emeritus Ernesto G. Chu.

Back in 1989, community newspapers were looked down here, and publishing one everyday in Cagayan de Oro was seen as business suicide.

Such was not the case with Chu who dared to go to an unchartered territory where others feared to tread. In the process, he proved that Cagayan de Oro and subsequently, the regions in Mindanao were ready to have their own daily newspaper.

Chu said he is grateful to Cagayanons and the Mindanaoan readers who have made the paper a part of their daily routine, and advertisers who made it possible for the paper to stay afloat so it could perform its watchdog role.

“We managed to do it on our own, and the paper will continue doing that,” he said.

Chu urged the newspaper’s staff to be diligent, accurate and unbiased, adding that the paper’s strength has always been its commitment to serve no one but citizens.

Gold Star’s editors said they would  not lose track of the newspaper’s responsibility because “the reading public cannot be underestimated.”

“They (readers) want substance.  That, we keep in mind,” added Chu.
