CHRISTMAS is so over once you receive a Happy Three Kings greeting like this: “6 pala ang original na kings, but only 3 reached Bethlehem. One went to the USA and became Burger King, one went to Chinatown to become Chowking, and one went to Manila to become Tapa King. Happy Three Kings!”

The day after, I showed a cable-TV flyer to my sis for the Pacquiao-Broner fight. Her reaction: “Naa diay siyay fight?” Haha! Still, we decided to avail of the pay-per-view, “para lingaw,” she said.

On that same Monday morning, the Golden Globes was being shown live but if you’ve stopped watching TV and Netflix, resulting to unfamiliarity with new shows and new actors, para que?

Lady Gaga was expected to win for her performance in “A Star Is Born,” but the best actress award for the drama category went to Glenn Close for “The Wife.” Oh, well.

In interviews, Lady Gaga usually talked about how she and Bradley Cooper began their journey for the movie and this was her version for “Entertainment Tonight”:

“We’re both from the East Coast, we’re both coming from Italian families, I was like ‘Are you hungry?’ I cooked him up some leftover pasta, and we were eating, and before I knew it, he said, ‘I would like to sing with you, if that’s OK.’

“And we went to the piano, and I printed out the sheet music for a song that he wanted to sing called ‘Midnight Special.’ I sat down and started to play, and he began to sing and I just stopped instantly in my tracks, and I looked at him and I said, ‘Bradley, you have an incredible voice, you sing from your gut, you sing from your soul, you sing from the nectar of your being.’”

Did she mention instant chemistry? Yes, she did, like her reply to an interview question in “Good Morning America”: “We had instant chemistry when I met him.” And then, she talked again about the pasta, etc.

Chemistry is one of the most difficult subjects in school, and when it does happen to a couple, it’s not always as instant as instant coffee and instant noodles. It may take time for the chemistry to, hmmm, be recognized and acknowledged. Kind of slowly but surely, much like the Hollywood career that began with dancing and music lessons as a child, progressing to auditions for kid characters in movies and television shows, with the hope their showbiz careers will continue till they’re as young at heart as Meryl Streep.

There’s no retirement age for Hollywood artists as long as they manage to remain relevant in the extremely fickle movie industry. That’s why show business is often compared to politics because, aside from the constant plastikan, both rely on one’s popularity. The famous actor’s movies and shows have large and diverse audiences. The popular political candidate has the most number of votes and, thereby, wins. Why invest on an actor or politician who ends up losing?

Pinoy candidates, however, are not allowed to release their biopics within the campaign season which for senators will be from Feb. 12 to May 11. There’s one about senatoriable Bato dela Rosa with Robin Padilla as the lead actor, so, they have to ensure it will be shown before Feb. 12. If after May 11, para que?

Campaigning during the Feast of the Black Nazarene is not exactly prohibited since there’s no law against it but EcoWaste Coalition’s Zero Waste campaigner Daniel Alejandre said that politicians should “show respect for the time-honored commemoration of the ‘traslacion’ by not putting up tarpaulins and distributing leaflets and other promotional materials which will only turn into ugly litter.”

But based on the trash left behind in Metro Manila by the Christmas and New Year celebrations, “ugly litter” seems to be the Pinoy’s best friend even without the campaign season.

Wannabes do need name recall to ensure their names are remembered by potential voters. And a political party would rather invite the most popular candidate who can bring in many votes, plus the richest candidate who can share his funds with the team. So, if you’re rich and not exactly popular, perhaps the political party you’re with is simply using you for your money. Ouch. And if you’re neither popular nor rich, they’re after your connections. Ouch again.

A tarpaulin or an ad where a candidate greeted one and all with a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and/or Happy Three Kings was either premature campaigning or he was tired of the usual GIF—it’s in the eye of the beholder.

It’s January now, expect more greetings from candidates for the Sinulog and other feasts coming soon to a hometown near you.
