THE Committee on Health, headed by Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane, has deferred the approval of the proposed ordinance to ban all cigarettes and vaping in the city.

This after committee member Councilor George Goking cautioned Gaane that a total ban might introduce more harm than good.

Sama ra nga nagpaboto’g time bomb ang Health Committee, kon ilang ipogos nga i-approve ang total ban sa sigarilyo ug e-cigarette,” Goking said.

Goking based his advise to Gaane in his experience as a chain smoker.

Goking said he stopped smoking in 1995 and that he experienced different “symptoms” when he stopped abruptly.

He said withdrawal of nicotine addiction is no laughing matter.

It, Goking added, also has psychological effects because forcing a person to stop smoking when they don’t want to could draw violent reactions.

He said nicotine withdrawal among drivers would pose higher risks on the city streets.

Goking does not support a total ban on smoking but only to regulate it.

Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte issued an Executive Order that bans smoking in public places.

The order imposes an “absolute ban” in schools, gas stations, hospitals, diners, and stairwells.
