In 2012, I received a life-changing phone call. On the other end of the line was someone from the U.S. Embassy Manila. I was asked if I wanted to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program, the U.S. Department of State’s most prestigious, most premiere professional exchange program. I was told it would be an all-expense paid trip (with a stipend as well) for current and emerging foreign leaders and that I would get to meet American counterparts in at least 4 states. I was also told that among the IVLP alumni are Presidents, Prime Ministers, Senators and other top level leaders all over the world. You probably know by now what my answer to that invitation was.

That U.S. exchange program truly made me, I felt, a better, more socially conscious citizen. It further inspired me to volunteer, to educate, to help. I’m glad that the U.S. has programs like the IVLP that aim to connect thought leaders and changemakers around the world.

Now, if you’re a budding Lumad, Moro and Christian youth and adult leader, here’s your chance to fly to DeKalb, Chicago (Northern Illinois) and Washington, D.C. and participate in a 4-week program that aims to highlight responsible citizenship, community service leadership and action plan development.

The Philippine Youth Leadership Program (PYLP) is open to youths aged 15 to 17 and adults aged 25 to 35. You must have strong/active participation in school/community activities. Good academic performance for the youth leaders while interested adult applicants must have demonstrated leadership skills. Meanwhile, I’d like to thank Globe Telecom for the fun media and bloggers appreciation night they organized early this week. Thank you for always including the CDO Bloggers (of which I am currently the Vice President for External Affairs). I’m actually doubly grateful because I got to take home a spanking brand new 40-inch Full HD LED TV plus a rice cooker! That was truly a lucky night! Thank you.

That’s it for this week! Visit my blog Mindanaoan.com for more lifestyle, pop culture and travel stories. Til next ish! Safe travels, everybody!
