MEDINA, Misamis Oriental — Every Holy Week, everyone in this town from public officials, workers, professionals to student, don their costumes and become actors in the reenactment of the traditional Lenten presentation, “Hinuklog” (Reflection).

Even Energy Undersecretary Benito Ranque comes home and dons his costume as a market vendor.

“Eight years. I have been doing this for eight years. I always come back here every Holy week,” Ranque, one of the reenactors, said.

Since the 1970s, when student trainers came to Medina and recruited residents into this theater production, the town has played host to this Lenten Passion play.

Although there were years when there were no presentations, the town has ensured the tradition lives on. Since 2012, Hinuklog has been performed every Holy Week.

The play starts on Holy Thursday night when the actors play Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles go to the garden of Gethsemane and one of them, Judas, would betray Him.

This scene is played out on the plaza fronting the Medina municipal building.

On Good Friday morning, the thunderous hooves of Roman cavalry men are heard on the main street of Medina as reenactors play the trial of Jesus Christ before Herod and Pontius Pilate at the town market and covered court.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is played on a huge empty lot in front of the town’s gym.

“Practice starts two months before the Holy Week. After work and dinner, we go to the gym where we practice every night,” Larry Marte, a municipal worker said.

Marte  plays the role of the Roman soldier who puts the crown of thorns on the head of Jesus Christ. He is among the original actors of the cast.

Efifanio Dorimon, a pedicab driver, gets to play the role of Jesus Christ after he won it during an audition in 2011. He replaced an elderly Medina resident who played Jesus Christ since 1970s.

“From time to time, the roles are given to other residents especially when the actors get old,” Marte said.

The cast took time to rest after their splendid performance last Good Friday and are preparing for their next presentation, “The Resurrection” at 9 pm Saturday night.  (mindanews)
