Iligan City — Minority councilors here have been given only P250 thousand allocation of the city’s P2.1-billion total budget for 2019, while the members of the majority were given a budget of  P1.1 million each.

This was taken from a Facebook post of Councilor Sammy Huertas, a minority councilor who is running for Vice Mayor in the coming May elections.

In response, Councilor Petronilo Pardillo, the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s chair of the committee on finance said the amount is “not final” because the budget allocation is still a proposal.

However, he admitted that the final allocation amounts would be around the amount posted by Huertas on his Facebook wall. Along with Huertas, another minority councilor like Queenie Belmonte would get that much too, Pardillo said.

“This has been the practice,” Pardillo said adding that when Huertas was then a member of the majority at the city council and chaired the committee on finance, Belmonte was also given about that much.

“That is because they do not handle any committee,” Pardillo said.

The city council budgets P30 million for committee services.

Pardillo said the amounts might be adjusted to pay for the staff of the councilors even if they do not have committees. The present majority councilors though received flak for their stand on the matter with residents posting on FB and other medium that the practice is “unfair.”
