JACLYN Jose made history as she won as best actress at the Cannes Film Festival, making her the first Filipino–and the first Southeast Asian at that–to bag the prestigious award.

Mary Jane Santa Ana Guck in real life, the 52-year old Jose won for her role in “Ma’Rosa” by highly acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza who pulled out a similar feat in 2009 for being the first Filipino director to win the top award for his film “Kinatay.”

In “Ma’Rosa,” Jose plays the role of a mother who is forced to sell drugs by crooked police.

Jose was nearly dumbfounded when her name was called. She told the crowd she merely went there to experience the red carpet walk with her daughter Andi Eigenmann who was also in accepting the award Sunday, Jose said she was surprised to win, and that she went to Cannes primarily for a red carpet walk with her daughter, actress Andi Eigenmann, who also played a role in Brillantes’s film.
