Chief Insp. Christian Rafols identified the victims as Judge Hector Salise, 64, of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur, and his bodyguard PO3 Edmund Narvasa.

Judge Salise was wounded in the head and back while Narvasa, who was driving for the judge at that time, suffered a gunshot wound in the leg.

Rafols, Butuan City Police Station 2 commander, said the judge was in a red government-owned Toyota Innova multi-purpose vehicle with license plates SGS-179  when the ambush was carried out. The victims were headed to Bayugan City.

The assailants used a silver grey Mitsubishi Montero sports utility vehicle, police said.

Investigators suspected the gunmen followed the judge from his neighborhood in Barangay Golden Ribbon, this city, and waited to attack until they reached the diversion road.

Despite running flat, Narvasa reportedly managed to drive towards a police checkpoint in Barangay Villa Kanangga after the attack where police officers and militiamen helped in rushing the victims to a hospital.

There were unverified reports of sightings of suspects in Sibagat, Agusan del Sur, where they supposedly transferred to another vehicle.

Police said they were still trying to gather information and clues to determine the motive for the attack.
