Plastics are all around us today. Everywhere we look there are plastic. Plastics are very convenient for everyday use but the sad thing is after its use it is just being thrown indiscriminately.

Plastics are made with synthetic materials and will not decompose for thousands of years. Try to imagine you order everyday juice or soda and everyday you use plastic straw (let us just consider the straw) which will be thrown after use times 1 million people doing the same in this city (just this city) for 1year, how many do you think that will amount to? a mountain of straw per year, and without proper discipline on garbage disposal no wonder that we are suffering urban flooding due to congested canals and the worse is that fishes and other aquatic and non-aquatic animals have consumed plastics already, which will eventually come back to us.

L.I.H.U.K. stands for Local Initiative for Holistic Upbringing of Knowledge is a movement of young professionals in Cagayan de Oro City who wants to be proactive in finding solution to the ever-growing problem being caused by garbage.

Last September 15, 2018 the group made a debut event “The Green Weekend” World Clean Up Day Celebration at the Event Center, Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City. The event was being partnered by Limketkai Mall, the Climate Reality Project Philippines and My World.

Canitoan which was very timely since the Barangay’s are finding ways on doing activities creatively to further waste management and segregation. L.I.H.U.K. have invitations now from various organizations and LGU’s on Eco brick making. One of its earlier project was an eco brick workshop at Brgy Looc, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental last September 2, 2018.
