TOURISM Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) general manager Mark Lapid has announced here that he would resign this month so he could focus on a bid for a Senate seat next year.

Lapid, a former governor whose father Manuel “Lito” is an action star turned senator, said he would likely file his certificate of candidacy next month as an “independent” unless the administration Liberal Party (LP) fields him as one of its 2016 bets for Senate seats.

His father, known for his gun-toting “Leon Guerrero” character in the movies and criticized for his silence in the Senate, is stepping down next year.

The Tieza official came over on the eve of the city fiesta and had lunch at Cogon market together with Councilor Lourdes Darimbang, chair of the city council’s tourism committee. There, he interacted with vendors and marketgoers.

Lapid said he wanted to work for legislation that would strengthen Philippine tourism. (nitz arancon)
