Lanao del Sur Electric Cooperative (LASURECO) sees no problem in the government’s plan to take over after the Marawi tragedy.

National Electrification Administration (NEA) Administrator Edgardo Masongsong earlier revealed there’s a proposed executive order submitted by the Office of the President to takeover LASURECO after a decision was made by a committee composed of the Department of Energy (DoE), Department of Finance (DoF) and other power distribution agencies.

“Actually, when I was appointed last year, LASURECO is already under the government’s control. It is a policy that the government can take over a power utility if it is on a brink for bankruptcy,” LASURECO General Manager Nordjiana Dipatuan-Ducol explained.

Aside from government takeover, Masongsong also added that LASURECO’s P11 billion worth of arrears can only be condoned through a legislative process.

“We are willing to do what it takes for the condonation of our debts. If the Congress wants to hear our justifications, we will be there. The government has always been there for us but we also need its support on this,” Ducol added.

Ducol cited the P87 million of electrification project granted by NEA for the six municipalities in Lanao del Sur which was finally completed earlier of May this year and helped boost the province’s economy by attracting investments.

NEA also plans to allocate P178 million for the electrification of temporary and permanent shelters occupied by Marawi siege victims.

LASURECO is also waiting for the reconstruction master plan of the most affected area in Marawi before implementing another electrification project in there. (WLBacelonia/PIA-ICCC)
