In an interview yesterday, Karen Lourdes Reyes, owner of Spa Traditions who served as the group’s spokesperson, claimed that many massagers mostly graduates of City Hall’s Technical Education Program initiated by the City Improvement Division (CID) lost their job when spa owners decided to close shop.

Reyes said they already sought the help of City Administrator Teodoro Sabugaa, who also expressed concern considering that those employed at the spa shops were graduates from technical program of the city government.

“He expressed concern kay daghan nag-graduate gikan sa city government nga Massage Theraphy NCII and then nawad-an karon sa trabaho,” she said.

Reyes, who owns and managed Spa Traditions, said has remained closed and other spa outlets has just closed like Touch and Heal along Corrales Avenue.

“Others spa owners and decent shops na gi-hold and business permits and sanitary permit ang mi-close na lang gyud because of the long standing issue and it has discouraged operators,” she added.

Recently, previous owners of the Nuat Thai and Athena Spa sold the firm to other interested operators because of the standing issue which remains unsolved before the committee level.

Paspas ang turn-over sa therapist because of the weekly hygiene check-up og ma-discourage na dayun sila. Naay uban Spa nga wala na sila mag-comply sa City Health kay every time ipa-smear niya ang therapist kay moesign man,” Reyes pointed out.

It can be recalled that a group of massagers and spa owners asked the city council to review an ordinance that requires masseuses to undergo weekly pap smear tests, vaginal cleaning and Gram staining, calling the city law “anti-women” and “unconstitutional.”
