Energy firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) intensifies its 25-year forest development and conservation program by growing endemic tree species within a 1,200 hectare Mapawa Carbon Sink project in Cagayan de Oro City. Since start of the project in 2004, more than 200,000 seedlings have been grown. The project is considered one of the largest industry-sponsored reforestation initiatives in the country and is undertaken jointly by DENR-EMB 10 and E. Pelaez Ranch Inc (EPRI). Project include timber stand improvement of a 500-hectare forest plantation, aforestation of 500 hectares open land and the protection of an existing 200-hectare natural forest. The project is boosting efforts in mitigating impact of torrential rains and floods that hit Cagayan de Oro and neighbouring areas of Northern Mindanao. (PR)
