The new cooperative has included the towns of Tagoloan and Opol in its feasibility study.

In a 10-page document submitted to the city council, Metro Cagayan said it would initially serve as an alternative water utility  for consumers in Bulua and Iponan, this city, and the village’s neighboring town Opol.

The study stated that the area, covered by the first phase of the Metro Cagayan project, has over nine thousand households “not properly serviced” by the Cagayan de Oro Water District.

Phase 2 would cover barangays Patag, Carmen, Kauswagan, Bayabas, Bonbon, Canitoan and Pagatpat.

The Metro Cagayan feasibility study showed that its plan is to expand to the eastern areas up to the municipality of Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental by the time it reaches the third phase of the venture.

The cooperative’s finance officer and spokesman Isagani Daba said the construction of the utility firm’s treatment plant has started and the cooperative would be ready to distribute water, treated in Barangay Baikingon, to households in two barangays of the city by January.

The cooperative said the COWD has a petition to increase its rates by 30 percent from P21.80 per cubic meter for the first 10 cubic meters, a move opposed by city council members. The cooperative said its minimum rate would be P20 per cubic meter.

“Dako kini og deperensiya sa atong current payment,” Daba said. “Mag-ampo lamang kami nga supportahan gayud kami sa siyudad sa among katuyoan. Ang nakanindot lamang niini nga katuyoan kay cooperative system among gigamit ilabi na kay dunay patronage refund.”

Daba said water consumers would be encouraged to join any of the cooperatives in the consortium so they could enjoy dividends.

In their estimated financial returns, Metro Cagayan projects that would start earning once it services 7,200 households. The conservative estimate is that this would happen on the third year after it starts its operations.
