SEAMAN Dominador Fuentes went missing the same day he received a promotion.
This was revealed yesterday by the missing seafarer’s wife Marites as the Coast Guard started an investigation into Tuesday’s mysterious disappearance of the 33-year-old Fuentes while he was on board the foreign vessel Grande Progreso in the waters off Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental. Fuentes has been a seafarer for 13 years.
Ms. Fuentes said her husband was promoted from second mate to chief mate the same day he went missing.
“Ayha pa gyud siya na-promote adtong adlawa sa pagka chief mate gikan sa pagka second mate pero na-missing man no-on siya,” she said.
The Fuenteses are from Zone 2, Barangay Bugo, this city.
The wife said the seaman was in high spirits as he told her about his promotion when they talked on the phone on Tuesday afternoon.
“Ang among gi-storyahan sa phone ang iyang pagka promote ug ako sab siya nga giemind nga mag-amping,” Ms. Fuentes said.
Coast Guard district commander Ferdinand Montermoso said he sent investigators to the foreign vessel yesterday.
Coast Guard investigators went aboard and searched the Villanueva town-bound ship using canines at around 10 am.
“Atong gipa-search sa K9 dog ang tanang so-ok sa maong barko kay basin na-a rana diha ang lawas ni Fuentes,” Montermoso said.
The Coast Guard, he said, started the investigation after the shorline search in western parts of Misamis Oriental yielded no positive result.
“Wala gyud namo makita ang lawas ni Fuentes sa mga coastal areas mao nang sa sulod sa barko na kami mag-imbistigar,” he said.
The vessel came from Brazil and is scheduled to dock at the port of the Philippine Sinter Corp. in Villanueva town next week.
