THE disappearance of Grande Progreso chief mate Dominador Fuentes last week has remained a mystery, prompting the seafarer’s wife to seek the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday.

This developed after authorities confirmed that a corpse found floating in the waters off Linamon, Lanao del Norte late last week, was not Fuentes’s.

Fuentes, who hails from Bugo, this city, was reported missing by the foreign vessel’s captain when the ship that came from Brazil reached the waters off Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, on Tuesday last week. Incidentally, Fuentes received his promotion to chief mate the same day.

The vessel is now near Villanueva town in Misamis Oriental, and is scheduled to dock at the Philippine Sinter Corp. port today.

Fuentes’s wife Marites went to see NBI regional director Patricio Bernales and asked for a thorough investigation into her husband’s mysterious disappearance after the Coast Guard failed to find the seaman.

The Coast Guard combed the shorelines of some western Misamis Oriental towns and even searched the vessel but found no trace of Fuentes.

The seaman’s wife said she hoped the NBI could help in finding out what really happened to her husband.

Coast Guard district commander Ferdinand Montermoso said his group has not yet concluded its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fuentes’s disappearance.

He said the Coast Guard confirmed that the dead man found floating off the waters of Linamon town last week did not belong to Fuentes.

“Nagpadala ug picture dinhi ang among  tawo sa Coast Guard sa Iligan, unya among gipakita ang picture sa pamilya. Dili man ma-o, negative man,” said Montermoso.

Meanwhile, the Marina in Cagayan de Oro said it would conduct its own investigation into Fuentes’s mysterious disappearance.

Gali Garcia, Marina chief of enforcement, monitoring and operation here, said the shipping company that owns Grande Progreso could be held liable for Fuentes’s disappearance.

“Ang amo niini nga duna kami record nga ipakita kon  ang pamilya moeklamo  batok sa shipping company nga gi-trabaho-an sa missing person,” Garcia said.
