YOU may wonder why the Church, more often than not, is silent on moral issues our politicians are involved in. Moral issues can be dishonesty and unfaithfulness to one’s marriage vows or being a plain womanizer. Perhaps, the Church itself is hounded by the same issue/s or perhaps, it also has accepted that we are a “macho” country that tacitly accepts the practice of having relations with more than one woman other than his girlfriend, fiancée or wife. Politicians, especially those in power, are prone to such temptations. Being a womanizer can be inborn or acquired. Given the circumstances, a man or even a woman can be driven to such extra-marital relationship.

Women in need of a job succumb to advances of the appointing power. Even married women succumb to this under certain working conditions. Wives, as well as husbands, suffer silently that sometimes lead to untimely demise of one.

Expect this issue to be raised in the days ahead as we look at the 2016 elections. Filipinos love telenovelas, and extramarital issues are good food for such. In fact, it already has started. People, love nests, infidelity and betrayal, these have started circulating.

Cagayan de Oro is such a small city that one cannot hide from the public eye. Some can be callous in their forbidden relationships but money and luxury is money and luxury. Oh, power, too.

Some wives of politicians have learned to accept their fate. Exposed to the Eves wherever they go, temptation can be very irresistible. But the wiser wives can also demand something in return which the errant husbands wholehearted give.

Such scenario is very common nationwide, so common that the Church has also learned to turn a blind eye to it. It is no longer a political issue, they say.

It makes us wonder what the people around these womanizers have to say. More often than not, they see the mole at a distance but not the mountain right before them. They criticize their supposed political enemies but their boss. Whatever message they send to their children, that is entirely their call.

This may be the reason why some people say we are not politically mature. We cannot have an election without hurling such dirt against the other. We cannot just talk of relevant issues that affect us as a people and a nation. The Church is perceived as the guardian of moral existence. It is a challenge and an obligation.

Have you not noticed that the traffic jams these days have become quite heavy? Lines of vehicles can reach a kilometer during peak and non-peak hours. Is it about the in-coming City Fiesta? It seems so. I love and hate our City Fiesta. I love it because it has been part of our tradition and I have good memories of it as a child and during high school days.

It’s just that sometimes, we overdo it. The preparations that go with it seem too much that it creates heavy traffic that can be irritating.

It used to be just a simple parade with a few floats. But like some other cities, we too have become copycats. So what are we going to have? Street-dancing or something new? It’s time to check my routes––the less travelled roads that would bring me to my daily destinations. It’s going to be a great challenge for Hapsay!
