In its commitment to end violence and uphold women’s rights, the Regional Inter-Agency Committee Against Trafficking, Child Pornography, Violence Against Women and their Children-10, held free legal, health and social services, motorcade, forum and information campaigns in the observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW in the region recently.

Department of Social Welfare and Development Assistant Regional Director for Administration Manuel Borres said despite the passage of laws on women’s protection and the country’s participation in the worldwide campaign to end VAW since 2002, VAWC cases have increased over the years.

Thus, he said the RIACAT-CP-VAWC in the region endeavors to build the capacities of all stakeholders to espouse a VAW-free community through the continuous advocacy and skills training on handling VAWelated cases.

“We urge the leaders and barangay officials to raise VAW awareness to their constituents by conducting forum, making VAWC desks functional and spotting offenders of women’s rights,” Gender Advocates-10 President Rosa Lacanglacang said.

Aside from the government, leaders and officials, Lacanglacang said men have a great role in ensuring that women’s rights are protected. Men should take part in the advocacy since they can reach out to their fellow men, and with their involvement, women and girls do not need to make the transformation alone, she said. (pia x)
