COUNCILOR Nadya Elipe has called for a thorough inspection of the new sanitary landfill in Barangay Pagalungan to determine whether or not it poses health risks.

Elipe’s call came as a response to allegations that the city dump is causing the pollution of the Iponan River and that villagers in Barangay San Simon have started developing skin problems.

“Ang tubig mahulog lang kuno kung mag-ulan pero I think the point is kung naay tubig gyud nga gakahulog sa suba. I think it has to be corrected kay dili man siguro maayo nga ang tubig sa basura mahulog sa suba,” she told the city council on Monday.

She said the entire system and the operation of the facility should be thoroughly inspected.

Elipe said there was a need to identify the real cause of the problem that could worsen later on and endanger people’s livelihood and health.

“The water might be tolerable now pero wala ta kabalo in the future. It might be affecting Pagalungan lang pero basin modagan nuon ni sa uban pa nga kabarangayan,” she said.

The city council tasked Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane, a physician by profession and chair of the council’s committee on health, to initiate an investigation into the complaints. (cli)
