Lt. Tere Ingente, 4ID spokesperson, said soldiers from the 65th Infantry Battalion figured in an encounter with the Maoist rebels in the forested area in Sitio Narvasa, Barangay Pinilayan, Tagoloan II in Lanao del Sur at about 9:40 am, Sunday.

Ingente identified the fatality as alias Allan, a commanding officer of platoon 2 of the NPA’s Guerrilla Front Committee 68.

She added that the soldiers were conducting a military operation in the area when they were attacked by at least 70 NPA guerrillas.

No soldier was wounded or killed in the ensuing 20-minute gun battle, Ingente added.

The soldiers were able to seize one M16 rifle, one AK-47 rifle, six AK-47 magazines with live ammunition, 14 backpacks, 27 sacks of rice, medical supplies, and subversive documents at the scene of the encounter.

Brigadier Gen. Eric Vinoya, commander  of the 403rd Infantry Brigade, said he is saddened by the death of the NPA leader.

“This yet another meaningless death of a NPA terrorist would not have occurred if only they heeded the government’s call for them to surrender and avail of the benefits of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program,” Vinoya said.
