THE Office of the Ombudsman committed a faux pas on its website on Thursday when it posted its press release that erroneously named one of three Mindanao mayors who were slapped with dismissal orders for various violations.

The ombudsman’s press release was the basis for various news reports about the dismissal orders against the mayors.

As a result of the error on the ombudsman’s website, most if not, all media outlets that reported the story here and across the country erred, too, including this paper.

Reads the second paragraph of the ombudsman’s Nov. 5 press release:  “Dismissed from service are Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City Mayor Oscar Moreno, Mayor Vicente Fernandez of Matanao, Davao del Sur and Mayor Mamintal Adiong of Ditsa-an Ramain, Lanao del Sur.  They were also perpetually barred from holding public office.”

“Mamintal Adiong” should have been “ Mayor Ali Untao Adiong” of Ditsa-an Ramain, Lanao del Sur.

The ombudsman corrected the mistake on its website yesterday, and changed the name to Ali Untao Adiong.

Jennie Tamano, provincial information officer of Lanao del Sur, pointed out the mistake of the press release from the Office of the Ombudsman.

“On Nov. 5, 2015, we have seen and heard over local and national media outlets that Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal Bombit Alonto Adiong Jr. was one of those dismissed from office per order given by the Office of the Ombudsman. We presume that this error was based on the press release issued by the said office yesterday which mistakenly named Mayor Ali Untao Adiong of the Municipality of Ditsaan Ramain as Mayor Mamintal Adiong,” reads the statement released by Tamano.

Tamano said the Lanao del Sur government communicated with the Office of the Ombudsman in Mindanao, and it extended its apology for the blunder.

“We would like to inform all media outlets, the public and our constituents, that it is Mayor Ali Adiong who is referred to in the said press release,” Tamano said.
