DEAR Chairman Jose Vicente B. Salazar of the Energy Regulatory Commission,

The undersigned is the convenor for the Crusade for Clean Government, a volunteer civil society group supporting President Duterte’s relentless campaign against corruption in government.

The distinguished  former Vice President and Ambassador, the late Emmanuel Pelaez had displayed in his office a cloth print depicting Christ’s Washing of the Feet of his 12 apostles.

Its symbolism is, I believe, reflects what is happening in your turf, at the ERC, where one of your people had committed suicide on what was believed as a message of hopelessness by a public servant who shunned corruption in your agency.

May I share with you what was in the mind of Pelaez on his concept of public service: “If you are after personal advantage, if you are seeking personal and material success, then public service is not the career for you. Public service is an apostleship of sacrifice and service.  You must use it to give of yourself unsparingly in the service of your people, not to make something for yourself.”

Pelaez had given a piece of advice to all of  us, including you and your colleagues at the ERC: “If I had my way, I would put in the office of every public official the picture of Christ washing the feet of the apostles to remind them that even God went down on his knees to serve his fellowmen. This must be the symbol of service for all public officials.”

At this juncture, Mr. Chairman, I would like to make a serious appeal to you and the rest of the ERC commissioners: heed the call of the President to resign.

Your explanation of seeing the President in Malacanang will come next after you have tendered your courtesy resignations.

Be man enough. This will be  the most appropriate  and honorable thing to do.
