THROUGH an ordinance, the Cagayan de Oro City Council during its regular session, Monday, January 7, presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy authorized the City Health Office to apply for a License to Operate for its pharmacy with the Food and Drug Administration/Department of Health (DOH), as a mandatory requirement of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

Under the guidelines of the DOH, Congress passed landmark legislations, namely: Food, Drugs and Devices and Cosmetics Act, Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009, Food Safety Act of 2013, and Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicine Act of 2008, mandating FDA to regulate establishment engaged in health products to ensure consumer safety, welfare protection, and fair trade practice.

Councilor Maria Lourdes S. Gaane, chair of the City Council committee on health and sanitation and health insurance, said the License to Operate is purely for social services of the people of Cagayan de Oro, not for economic enterprise.

“It is a social services nga gaipanghatag sa City Health Office and barangay health centers and kailangan nato ang license kay naa man ta’y pharmacy,” Gaane stressed.

The ordinance was reviewed and endorsed by the committees on health and on laws and rules, respectively chaired by Councilors Gaane and Ian Mark Q. Nacaya. (SP)
